My dear subscribers. Thanks for being with me and welcome to the 7th newsletter from my project El Soter. For you who have signed in last weeks I'd like to say that I write to you no more than two times a month, mostly no more than once. I write few words about what happened recently, my thoughts about the world surrounding me and music, of course. Did you miss previous editions of this newsletter? You can check them here: www.neversun.net/elsoter/freestuff.html 1. News 2. Road to Ruins 3. Sum ............................ 1. News Video »The Hail«, the one that is included on DVD in the Appletree of Discord album, has been nominated for the award at Exground Filmfest in Germany, so next month I am going to attend this festival. exground-filmfest.de It's not a relevant news, but I've been in bed for ten days now, because of a terrible back ache. Doctor said I'll be allright in a week. 2. Road to Ruins It was a long time ago when I read a book »The Stars Must Wait« by Keith Laumer. It is about a young Air Force Lieutenant Commander that wakes up from a suspended animation after hundred years. He discovers that world became a post-apocalyptic land and he's trying to find out what happened. He discovers that this was no war cause, but a product of chaos and anarchy that arose among men. Why did this book come into my mind recently? It's enough to watch news recently to discover that world is going through temporary (yes, I am an eternal optimist) recession and I am not talking about the US only, although it is the one mostly on our mouths nowadays. It is in Europe, too. Not that we are starving, but the feeling of something not going right is disturbing. To all of us. The technology is advancing with light speed, while the society is moving as fast as a snail. The first one is an excellent information, the second one it is not. This was always the concept of El Soter's message and this was always what I was tring to say with my music. I am not Pink Floyd or Rush or Metallica or whoever might make a difference. I am an infinitesimal piece in the world of music, but yet I am trying to send a message out there. I try. I don't want to sound like a new-age false moralist (I hate them), but yet: try to make something for yourselves and for the ones coming after you: - Boycott crappy food with doubtful additives and conservants, including restaurants that offer them. Do something for yourself and buy quality food. - Boycott energy multinationals. Turn off electric stuff you don't use (lighting, devices in stand-by, computers you don't use at the moment, ...). Use a bike or go by walk if possible, not using motor devices. - Etc. Will that make a difference? I don't know. At least you've tried. 3. Sum I was fascinated by Oomph! (German industrial/metal band) and Katatonia how they manage to play waltz (3/4 beat) in metal style. Actually, whatever it is not 4/4 beat in music intrigues me. So, this is how I wanted to work on a waltz, too. And this is the case of »Sum«. While bands mentioned above made their different beat in an imperceptible way, I wanted to accentuate it. I wanted it sound like a cheap waltz you hear in hotels, by using simple synths. Of course in dancing nights in hotels and terraces don't play waltz with distorted guitar, but yet... The song is about the »stop«. It's about having a good sense of knowing where our limits are and not sum worse to the bad. It might be right in the style of previous article in this newsletter. Thanks again for being part of this newsletter. Talk to you in a couple of weeks. All the best, Blaz Erzetic P.S. Should you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me. I like hearing from you. Might this newsletter be of interest to someone you know?
